Suitable Locations for an Indoor Barn Owl Nest Box

Indoor Barn Owl Nest Boxes are best suited to quiet agricultural buildings where Barn Owls already hunt or regularly visit.

Traditional barns and modern agricultural buildings can both provide excellent nesting opportunities where suitable access is easily available.

Choosing the Right Building

The best buildings provide a quiet environment with easy access for Barn Owls to enter and leave naturally.

Where possible, install the nest box away from regular human activity, machinery and bright artificial lighting.

Installing in Modern Farm Buildings

Modern agricultural buildings often have large open spaces with relatively few beams, ledges or traditional timber structures.

As growing owlets begin exploring outside the nest, additional perching opportunities nearby can make those first movements much easier while helping them safely develop confidence before their first flights.

This is one of the reasons our indoor nest box includes a generous external landing platform.

Recommended Installation Height

A height of around 12–14 feet (3.5–4 metres) is often suitable where installation can be carried out safely.

The exact height is usually less important than ensuring Barn Owls can approach the nest box comfortably and that nearby perching opportunities are available.

Supporting Growing Owlets

As young Barn Owls develop, they naturally become curious and begin exploring beyond the nest before they are capable of sustained flight.

Providing nearby beams, ledges or additional perches can help reduce unnecessary falls while encouraging natural development within the building.

Where suitable perching or beams are limited, look to add some owl-friendly timber perches close to the nest box, this supports the natural behaviour of growing Owlets to branch out from the nest box and return safely.

Avoiding Disturbance

Choose locations where disturbance from people, machinery and livestock is kept to a minimum during the breeding season wherever practical.

A quiet nesting environment with minimal interruption helps Barn Owls to raise their young successfully.

Developed Through Practical Conservation

Our indoor Barn Owl Nest Box has evolved through years of practical conservation work alongside farmers and landowners across the UK.

Every feature has been developed to provide a secure nesting site while making future inspection, installation and long-term maintenance straightforward.

Contents & Access when Delivered

Your Indoor Barn Owl Nest Box is supplied fully assembled.

Inside the nest box you will find the external landing platform, installation guidance and the required fixings. To gain access, simply remove the four roof screws and lift the roof off.

Before use, add approximately 2″ (50mm) of clean woodshavings to the floor to allow a natural nest scrape to form.

Woodshavings are widely available and are not supplied with the nest box.
