IN MEMORY OF A VERY SPECIAL BARN OWL & FOUNDER 'GYZMO'
Always in our Hearts & Mind
1995 - 2014 RIP
Due to a complicated illness, Gyzmo our beloved Barn Owl took a turn for the worst & went downhill with an unexpected illness. It is with a massive amount of sadness that we lost an amazing & well loved Barn Owl, this was not just any Barn Owl, he was the boss & our closest friend. On the morning of 7th June 2014 at 1.30am, Gyzmo gently fell asleep in our hands. Typing this with tears is hard.
Gyzmo loved working with people
For those who had the pleasure of meeting Gyzmo, whether you flew him to the gloved hand, met him on a photography day or even encountered him during a school visit, group visit or Barn Owl Birthday Party, people of all ages & backgrounds always felt honoured by his presence. Gyzmo's favourite people of all were children or people who had personal problems of their own, the happier they become the more he loved their company, he simply loved creating an atmosphere where people would feel valued! At 4pm he would always be waiting eagerly at the front of his aviary because he knew this was his time when visitors including children would be arriving to meet him on a Flying Experience, this is where he enjoyed showing off his silent flight skills over peoples heads & to the gloved hand worn by his guests. What a show off he was!
Gyzmo supported Owl Conservation & Rescues
During his 19 years, he was a proud educator, supported his wild cousins by demonstrating to people how Barn Owls liked Owl Boxes. Gyzmo also worked very closely with his carers to raise important funds to help injured & abused Owls whether their origins are wild or captive bred. When sick or injured Owls arrived at the Centre, we would perch Gyzmo in the same room to reassure each arrival that they were in a safe place & us humans were here to help them. He simply had that special behaviour that created such a calming & relaxing atmosphere. Gyzmo was a very special Barn Owl & he knew it!
