Kestrel Nest Box Placement Guide
Habitat location
Kestrels prefer open countryside with rough grassland and habitat corridors alongside hedgerows and natural stone walls, where they hunt voles and small mammals.
Recommended height
Install between 12–16 ft (4–5 metres) above ground.
Direction to face
Face the entrance north-east or south-east to avoid prevailing weather.
Visibility
Ensure the entrance is visible from a distance and not obstructed by foliage.
Safety considerations
Avoid placing nest boxes near busy roads, railway lines or high-traffic areas, as traffic can be a major threat to young kestrels.
